This piece is inspired by a type of orchid discovered in 1911 near the hill station of Panchgani, which is also the source of its name — Panchgani Habé-aamri (Habenaria panchganiensis). The Habé studs emphasise the flower’s mesmerising moth-like form, intricately hand-painted with a metallic lustre.

Inspiration

The Habenaria panchganiensis, locally known as panchgani habé-aamri in Marathi and Konkani, is a terrestrial orchid endemic to the Western Ghats of India, specifically found in the Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts of Konkan.

Each flower is composed of two lateral petals and a more elaborate third lip petal that is lobed and fringed, giving it a uniquely sensual appearance. Blooming from July to September, it aligns its existence with the rhythm of the monsoon season, thriving on hilltops in high rainfall areas where it is both sunny and moist.

Due to its restricted habitat and specific growing conditions, Habenaria panchganiensis is considered a rare and valuable species. Recently, it has been placed in the critically endangered category, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts to protect this delicate orchid.
